Alternative medicine
Coffee Enema
Coffee Enema is an alternative-medicine practice considered for digestive concerns and broader wellness goals. Although the practice has been examined in research, the reported benefits are anecdotal and do not establish that it improves health.
Coffee Enema is not a wellness routine to adopt.
We do not advise this practice
It can cause harm.
Why it is not advised
Coffee Enema is not advised because its claimed benefits, including improved digestion and detoxification, rest on references or community reports; no study has tested these claims in people. The procedure can irritate or injure the rectum, and repeated evacuation can lead to dehydration and electrolyte loss. Caffeine absorbed through the rectum has an unpredictable dose and may add cardiovascular or nervous-system effects.
These risks are of particular concern for people with bowel conditions, kidney or heart disease, or problems with fluid or electrolyte balance. Children and pregnant people are also identified as more vulnerable to complications.
Overview
Coffee Enema is an alternative-medicine practice considered for digestive concerns and broader wellness goals. Although the practice has been examined in research, the reported benefits are anecdotal and do not establish that it improves health. The overall picture remains preliminary, so hoped-for benefits should not be treated as established. Coffee enemas are considered harmful and are not advised.

Interactions
Dangerous combinations
Highest severity first
- →CaffeineTheoreticalSerious
Caffeine from a coffee enema is absorbed through the rectum; in one study, blood caffeine was about 3.5 times lower than after drinking coffee with the same amount. Caffeine supplements taken the same day add to total caffeine intake; too much can cause a fast or irregular heartbeat, tremor, anxiety, and poor sleep, while very high doses can cause seizures.
- →DecongestantsTheoreticalSerious
Ephedrine can amplify stimulation from caffeine absorbed through the rectum, increasing the risk of severe high blood pressure, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, agitation, and seizures.
- →SupplementsAloe VeraTheoreticalSerious
Aloe latex has laxative effects that can add to coffee-enema diarrhea, dehydration, and potassium loss.
- →Stimulant LaxativesTheoreticalSerious
Senna can add to bowel evacuation and fluid and electrolyte depletion from a coffee enema, increasing the risk of severe diarrhea and low blood potassium.
- →Osmotic LaxativesTheoreticalSerious
Magnesium citrate can markedly intensify diarrhea and dehydration from a coffee enema. Its accumulation is especially hazardous with impaired kidney function.
- →SupplementsOmega-3TheoreticalSerious
High-dose fish oil has antiplatelet activity, which may increase bleeding risk if the enema irritates or perforates rectal tissue.
- →SupplementsYohimbineTheoreticalSerious
Yohimbine may add cardiovascular and anxiety effects to caffeine absorbed from a coffee enema, potentially causing marked increases in blood pressure and heart rate.
- →SupplementsAdrafinilTheoreticalSerious
Adrafinil combined with caffeine absorbed from a coffee enema may cause dangerous cardiovascular stimulation, including hypertensive crisis and arrhythmias.
- →SupplementsGinkgo BilobaTheoreticalSerious
Ginkgo Biloba has blood-thinning properties that may increase bleeding risk if the rectal lining is damaged during enema administration.
- →SupplementsVitamin ETheoreticalSerious
High-dose Vitamin E can inhibit platelet aggregation, raising the risk of bleeding if the enema injures rectal tissue.
- →SupplementsMagnesiumTheoreticalSerious
High-dose Magnesium used as a laxative can worsen diarrhea and fluid loss. With impaired kidney function, Magnesium may accumulate and cause high blood magnesium, which is distinct from electrolyte losses caused by diarrhea.
- →SupplementsSynephrine (Bitter Orange)TheoreticalSerious
Synephrine can raise blood pressure and heart rate. Combined with caffeine absorbed through the rectum, it may increase cardiovascular stress and lead to arrhythmias or hypertensive events.
Where the evidence comes from
- Reference knowledge
Open Synephrine (Bitter Orange)Confidence
confidence 65/100
Unrated(3)
- →SupplementsBromelainTheoreticalCaution
Bromelain may inhibit platelet aggregation; if the enema causes rectal tissue injury, combined use could increase rectal bleeding.
- →SupplementsArginineTheoreticalCaution
Arginine-related blood-vessel widening may compound fluid depletion or vasovagal responses from the enema, increasing the risk of dizziness, low blood pressure, and fainting.
- →SupplementsL-TheanineTheoreticalCaution
Although generally calming, L-Theanine may paradoxically increase sensitivity to low-dose caffeine absorbed through the rectum, potentially worsening anxiety or insomnia in sensitive individuals.

Coffee enemas may disrupt gut microbiota balance and alter colonic pH, potentially reducing the colonization efficacy of oral Probiotics.
- →PracticesDry FastingCertaintyMediumSourceTheoreticalDepleting
Dry Fasting removes fluid intake while a coffee enema can cause fluid and electrolyte loss, substantially increasing the risk of dehydration, hypotension, and kidney injury.
- →PracticesColon HydrotherapyCertaintyMediumSourceTheoreticalCompetitive
Frequent use of Colon Hydrotherapy alongside coffee enemas may increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance and bowel flora disruption.
- →PracticesFinnish SaunaCertaintyMediumSourceTheoreticalDepleting
Sweating and vasodilation during Finnish Sauna use can add to coffee-enema-related fluid loss and may provoke dizziness, hypotension, or fainting.
