What is it
Decongestants are respiratory medicines, including Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) and Phenylephrine. They are generally associated with addressing congestion.
This page is an educational reference for checking whether other medicines or substances may interact with these decongestants. It does not replace medical advice; questions about a medical condition or treatment can be discussed with a clinician.
What interacts with it
The most concerning combinations involve added cardiovascular or stimulant stress. Cigarette Smoking can make ephedrine metabolism unpredictable; together, the stimulant effects may raise blood pressure and the risk of hypertensive crisis or stroke. Coffee Enema may increase caffeine-related sympathetic stimulation after rectal absorption, with possible severe hypertension, tachyarrhythmia, agitation, or seizures. Finnish Sauna and Ice Bath / Cold Plunge can add heat-related or cold-induced sympathetic strain, respectively, increasing concern about blood-pressure elevation, arrhythmia, hyperthermia, or collapse. These combinations warrant discussion with a prescriber or pharmacist, particularly for people with cardiovascular disease or uncontrolled hypertension.
Caffeine, Green Tea Extract (EGCG), and Panax Ginseng may add to the cardiovascular or central nervous system stimulation of stimulant decongestants. The possible results include palpitations, increased heart rate or blood pressure, tremor, anxiety, or insomnia. Cycling, Swimming, Yoga, Hatha Yoga, and Anusara Yoga may further increase heart rate, blood pressure, cardiac workload, heat strain, or arrhythmia risk through exertion, heat, forceful breathing, inversions, or dehydration.
Box Breathing is not known to create a specific dangerous interaction with decongestants, but decongestants can increase heart rate, blood pressure, or anxiety; palpitations, chest discomfort, or worsening symptoms are reasons to seek clinical guidance. The interaction information is based on pharmacology references, so some practice-related concerns reflect pharmacologic reasoning rather than evidence of a specific event.
