What is it

Sustained Attention is a measurement focused on one distinct outcome within the broader category of focus. It helps interpret whether a result relates specifically to maintaining attention, rather than treating focus as a single, broad concept. This marker is therefore best read as one focused aspect of attention, alongside other outcomes that may also fall under focus.

How to measure it

Measure Sustained Attention daily using the same scoring approach each time. Record the result consistently so readings can be compared from one day to the next.

Interpret the direction consistently: higher values represent better sustained attention. Avoid changing how you judge or record the measurement between readings, because a different approach can make week-to-week comparisons less meaningful.

What good looks like

Sustained Attention is measured on a scale from 0 to 10, with higher values indicating better performance. The plausible range provides orientation for interpreting where a reading sits, but a single number is not a verdict on you. Targets are personal and are most useful when considered alongside your own pattern over time.

Because this measure is intended to be followed daily, look for the direction and consistency of readings across several days rather than reacting to one result. A gradual, repeatable pattern is more informative than an isolated high or low value. Comparisons are most meaningful when readings are taken at a consistent time and with the same device and technique; changing these conditions can make otherwise similar readings harder to compare.

What moves it

Ashwagandha and Lavender Extract are the interventions measured directly against sustained attention, and both moved this higher-better marker upward. The Ashwagandha finding came from a controlled trial, while the Lavender Extract evidence combined studies with generally favorable results but some variation, including one study reporting slower reaction times. These findings are the most direct evidence for changes in sustained attention itself.

Other interventions are connected to related effects that sustained attention may track, though trials did not measure this marker directly. For concentration improvement, the related interventions were L-Theanine, Ginkgo Biloba, Tai Chi, Caffeine, Hatha Yoga, and American Ginseng. For mental endurance, they included Ashwagandha, Vitamin B7 (Biotin), Tai Chi, Caffeine, Choline (Bitartrate), and Coenzyme Q10. Brain fog reduction was linked with Ashwagandha, Bacopa Monnieri, Passionflower, Rhodiola Rosea, CBD (Cannabidiol), and Gratitude Journal. These relationships should not be read as proof that any of them changed sustained attention.

Timing varies substantially across these related outcomes, from immediate or acute effects to follow-up over 12 weeks. The direct sustained-attention finding was rechecked at 12.9 weeks, so the marker-level result reflects a later assessment rather than a short-term change. Evidence for the related effects also spans controlled human research, clinical findings, pharmacology references, and anecdotal reports, making those results less directly comparable to the measurements of sustained attention.
