alkaloid
Nicotine
Nicotine is a naturally occurring alkaloid found in tobacco and some other plants, best known for its stimulant and dependence-forming effects. It activates nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain and body, increasing alertness, heart rate, and the release of several neurotransmitters including dopamine. Nicotine matters because it can sharpen attention in the short term while also carrying a high risk of addiction and cardiovascular strain.
